Planning a new bathroom and wondering how long you'll be without it? Here's a realistic, week-by-week timeline for a full bathroom renovation — and the things that speed it up or slow it down.

How Long Does a Bathroom Renovation Really Take?

For a standard full bathroom renovation, most homeowners in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire should budget for 7 to 10 working days on site. A straightforward like-for-like refit can be finished in under a week, while a larger project — changing the layout, converting to a wet room, or tackling structural work — can run to two or three weeks. The honest answer is "it depends," so below we break down exactly what happens at each stage and what makes a bathroom fit faster or slower.

A Realistic Week-by-Week Timeline

Day 1 — Strip-Out

The first day clears the room back to a blank canvas. Your existing suite, tiles, flooring and any old boxing are removed and taken away. It's the noisiest, dustiest day of the whole job — but it's also quick. By the end of day one you'll have an empty, stripped room ready for first-fix work.

Days 2–3 — First Fix (Plumbing & Electrics)

This is the important behind-the-walls work. Pipework is moved or renewed for your new layout, waste runs are set, and any electrical work — extractor fans, downlights, shaver sockets, underfloor heating — is run back to the consumer unit. If you're moving the position of the toilet, basin or shower, this is the stage that takes the extra time.

Days 3–4 — Walls, Boarding & Waterproofing

Walls are made good, and in wet areas we fit moisture-resistant backer board and apply a tanking (waterproofing) membrane. This step is non-negotiable for a shower enclosure or wet room — skipping it is the single most common cause of leaks and blown tiles a couple of years down the line.

Days 4–7 — Tiling

Tiling is usually the longest single stage, and it's where the room starts to look like a bathroom again. Wall and floor tiles are set, then left to cure before grouting. Large-format tiles, mosaics, herringbone patterns and full-height walls all add time — beautiful, but worth planning for.

Days 7–9 — Second Fix (Fitting the Suite)

Now the satisfying part: your new toilet, basin, taps, shower, bath and radiator are fitted and connected. Sealant goes in, the extractor and lighting are commissioned, and everything is tested for leaks and correct operation.

Days 9–10 — Finishing & Handover

Final touches — trims, painting, mirror and accessories — followed by a full clean and a walk-round with you to make sure you're delighted before we leave.

What Speeds a Bathroom Up (or Slows It Down)

  • Keeping the same layout is the biggest time-saver — no re-routing of pipes or waste.
  • Having materials on site before we start avoids mid-job delays waiting on a back-ordered tile or vanity unit.
  • Wet rooms and layout changes add days for extra waterproofing and first-fix work.
  • Older properties in towns like St Albans, Berkhamsted and Tring occasionally hide surprises behind the walls — we always build a little contingency in for period homes.
  • Drying and curing times for adhesive, grout and sealant can't be rushed without risking the finish.

Do You Have to Move Out?

No. The vast majority of our customers stay in their home throughout. If it's your only bathroom, we'll plan the works to minimise the time your facilities are out of action, and we always leave the site safe and tidy at the end of each day.

Spreading the Cost

A new bathroom is a significant investment, but it doesn't have to be a large upfront payment. We offer 0% finance for 12 and 24 months through Phoenix Financial Consultants, so you can spread the cost over affordable monthly payments. Longer terms are also available, subject to status and credit checks.
