Most boiler replacements are completed in a single day. But some jobs take longer. Here's what affects the timescale and what to expect on the day.

One of the most common questions homeowners ask before booking a boiler installation is: "How long will it take?" The honest answer is: it depends — but for most straightforward replacements, the answer is one day.

This guide explains what affects the installation timescale, what happens on the day, and how to prepare so everything goes smoothly.

Typical Boiler Installation Timescales

Type of InstallationTypical Duration
Like-for-like combi boiler replacement4–8 hours (one day)
Combi boiler with new flue route6–10 hours (one day)
Regular to combi conversion1–2 days
System boiler with new cylinder1–2 days
Full central heating installation (no existing system)3–5 days

What Happens During a Standard Boiler Replacement?

Morning: Removal and Preparation

The engineer arrives, introduces themselves, and puts down dust sheets to protect your flooring. The existing boiler is isolated — gas supply turned off, system drained down — and the old unit is carefully removed. The flue is disconnected and the pipework is assessed.

Midday: Installation

The new boiler is positioned and secured to the wall. New pipework connections are made, the flue is fitted through the external wall, and the gas supply is reconnected. A magnetic filter and limescale filter are fitted to protect the system.

Afternoon: Testing and Commissioning

The system is filled, pressurised, and tested for leaks. The boiler is fired up and run through a full commissioning sequence to verify correct operation. The engineer checks all radiators heat evenly, confirms hot water flow rates, and sets up the thermostat or smart controls. You'll receive a full demonstration of how to use the new system.

Before Leaving

The engineer clears up, removes the old boiler, and leaves the area clean and tidy. You'll receive your Gas Safe certificate and warranty registration confirmation.

What Makes an Installation Take Longer?

Changing Boiler Type

Converting from a regular (heat only) boiler to a combi involves removing the cold water storage tank from the loft and the hot water cylinder from the airing cupboard. This extra work typically adds half a day to a full day to the installation time.

Relocating the Boiler

Moving a boiler to a different room — for example, from a kitchen to a utility room — requires running new gas pipework and potentially a new flue route. This adds complexity and time.

Older or Corroded Pipework

In older properties, pipework can be corroded or non-standard. If significant sections need replacing, this adds time. We always assess the condition of your existing system before quoting so there are no surprises on the day.

Power Flushing

If your existing heating system has significant sludge buildup, a power flush may be recommended before the new boiler is connected. This typically adds 4–6 hours to the job and is often done the day before the boiler installation.

Do I Need to Be Home All Day?

Yes — you'll need to be home for the duration of the installation, as the engineer will need access to various parts of the property and will want to demonstrate the new system to you before leaving. We send an on-route text message when the engineer is on their way, and you can track their location in real time so you know exactly when to expect them.

Will I Have Hot Water and Heating the Same Day?

In almost all cases, yes. A like-for-like boiler replacement is designed to restore your heating and hot water the same day. The only exception is if unexpected complications arise — in which case we'll always communicate clearly and agree a plan with you before leaving.
